Chapter 43
LISA CHAISSON HAD LIVED in this subdivision since it was built ten years ago. Her husband immediately fell in love with their house, but Lisa didnât feel comfortable moving to such an affluent place. But as crime increased in Campton, she was glad that they had purchased a house here. So far nothing had happened, which was why she was surprised to see all the traffic that came and went over at her next door neighborâs house.
If the doctor hadnât ordered her to take it easy, she would still be at work. However, carrying twins caused more of a strain on her body than they previously thought. Thankfully, Shelly was a competent person and Lisa was comfortable leaving the shop in her capable hands.
She owned the local bookstore for about seven years now and recently added a coffee shop to it. It turned out to be one of the best decisions she could have made. It not only brought in an entirely new crowd, but the local book clubs started using her business to conduct their meetings. It was a win-win situation for all of them. The book club members may not shell out a lot of money for books, as most of them used their eReaders, but they spent money on coffee and pastries while they discussed the latest book they were reading. She also kept a current schedule of what each club read. She found that more and more of her patrons would purchase that very book.
It also helped that the shop was centrally located in downtown Campton. Not only was business good, but she caught tidbits of information that went on around town. Which was why she was curious about the traffic at the LeFleurâs house. She heard whispers about how the bank was ready to foreclose on their house and that they were past due on most of their bills. At first, Lisa had dismissed the rumors. This town was known to embellish gossip, but now she couldnât help but wonder. The news constantly reported how houses in nice, ordinary neighborhoods were being raided for drugs. There were even reports of houses exploding from meth labs. Thankfully, that hadnât happened in this neighborhood, but with the amount of traffic going in and out she found herself speculating if they indeed were dealing drugs there at the house.
Neil, her husband, told her to turn a blind eye, but when cars started driving by at all hours he began to complain. He kept mumbling something about a decrease in property values if a drug ring was busted here. It aggravated her that now he was worried, but only when it bothered him.
Well, that was okay. Bored out of her mind, she started writing down license plates. If he really wanted to pursue this, then she would give him all the ammunition he needed.
Even if it wasnât drugs, something odd was going on at that house. Several of the cars were frequent visitors. Oddly enough, several came on the same day of the week and at the same time, almost as if for an appointment.
